Breathe Easy: It’s National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month!

Did you know that every May, we dedicate time to focus on something that affects millions: asthma and allergies? Since 1984, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has declared May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, a crucial period to boost understanding of these common yet often serious respiratory and immune conditions.

This year, the focus is clear and vital: Make asthma and allergy treatments accessible for all. Think about it – access to life-saving medicines shouldn’t be a barrier. AAFA is emphasizing the critical need for everyone, regardless of their background or circumstance, to be able to obtain the treatments that manage their underlying conditions and stop frightening symptoms in their tracks.

The impact of asthma, allergies, eczema (atopic dermatitis), and other related allergic conditions is significant. Beyond the physical distress, these conditions can create a heavy emotional, social, and even financial burden. Sadly, in the United States alone, around 4,000 deaths occur each year due to asthma and allergies. The even more sobering truth? Most of these deaths are preventable.

This is where our collective voice comes in. AAFA believes in the power of community action to drive real change. Throughout May, we’re all invited to join in and urge policymakers to support solutions that prioritize the health of our communities. Key areas for advocacy include more affordable treatments, better healthcare coverage, reduced barriers to care, and increased federal investment in research. You can visit AAFA’s Advocacy Action Center to make your voice heard.

But advocacy is just one way to get involved. The Allergy & Asthma Network has highlighted several impactful actions we can all take:

  • Make your voice heard on Allergy & Asthma Network Advocacy Day (May 7th) by contacting your representatives about crucial legislation.
  • Celebrate World Asthma Day (May 6th) by reviewing your Asthma Action Plan.
  • Tune into the “Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Innovation Podcast” to learn from experts.
  • Raise awareness online using the provided social media toolkit and hashtags like #NAAAM.
  • Explore webinars and recordings from the Allergy & Asthma Network on various relevant topics.
  • Support the Allergy & Asthma Network’s 40th anniversary by sharing your story or donating.
  • Consider going allergy-free for a day (May 13-19) during Food Allergy Awareness Week.
  • Learn and share the correct way to blow your nose!

This May, let’s all play a part in raising awareness, educating our communities, and advocating for better access to care for everyone affected by asthma and allergies. Whether you share information online, contact your representatives, or simply take a moment to learn more, your efforts can make a real difference. Let’s work together to help everyone breathe easier. 💙
